Use this with short main idea passages (task cards). Students will work in groups of 4 and choose a task card (all will want to have the same), then using the strategy on their corner they will determine the main idea. Once they have decided the main idea independently they will discuss and come up with the best main idea for the passage as a group, combining their ideas and writing it in the middle.

Allow your students to visualize the main idea using text evidence. Using this simple Circle Map, students can write repeated words to help them identify the main idea of the text.
