Schlinkmann Science

Students collect data on species richness, species diversity and species evenness or relative abundance. Their “ecosystem” will be the school parking lot, and the” species” will be the different car models. They will be comparing the specific diversity of two different ecosystems: the student and staff parking lots.

Students use play-doh to practice the steps of both Mitosis and Meiosis. Each group will need two colors to model each step of cell division (I buy mini sized pack off of Amazon). Then using their Chromebook, they take a picture after each step is made and showcase their model in a premade slideshow that they access on your digital learning platform such as Canvas. Slideshow and directions are included. Play-doh is not :)

This is a three part, multi-day activity. Part 1: Animal AdaptationsStudents walk around the room looking at organism posters (included) hung up around the room. Students research and create a report about a severe weather system and a specific weather event. Then they make a slideshow or poster to showcase the information. Students design an environmentally conscious city using the provided map and description. They must make decisions about where to place the required list (schools, energy plants, waste sites, mining sites etc.). Each requirement has a certain number of boxes that must be put on the map (example: 80 boxes must be used for housing, 2 mining sites that are 2 boxes each, etc.). Then they write a paper using the template provided to explain their reasoning as to why they made the decisions they did.

MAKE A BABY LAB or "MABL" Students determine their own genotypes based on their phenotypes. While doing this, students practice recognizing complete and incomplete dominance. Then students "make a baby" with another student in class OR with their celebrity crush. They combine the two partner's genotypes by using Punnett squares to determine their baby's genotypes and phenotypes. At the end, they list the baby's traits and draw a picture of their baby. Students model different angles of insolation intensity using flashlights. Students angle their flashlight at different angles showing that the area the light covers increases, while the source of light stays constant. Thus, decreasing the intensity of the light. Students then calculate solar intensity using the given equation.

In groups of two, students research two of the given items and how society manages the waste associated with the particular item. Then they make a slideshow to showcase the information. Give students a paper bag (from a grocery store) and they will collect and inventory each piece of trash they throw away (or recycle). They are expected to inventory everything, but only collect (keep in their bag) non-biohazardous materials. At the end of the predetermined days/weeks, the class organizes their trash into piles to make conclusions about human use and waste.

Students practice what they know about body systems by comparing the organs and functions, how each system works with the others, drawing where they are in the body and creating a crossword puzzle. The list of body systems can be edited to those that have been taught.
