Many times in science classes students will use their senses to observe what is happening. Whilst this is a good way to start it is important for students to realise their senses can be tricked. This exercise illustrates the need to use quantitative data (or measurments) as well as qualitative data. This worksheet can be used at any level from junoir school through to senoir school. Have fun!
There has been a lot of discussion in the media recently about the amount of sugar in the average person’s diet. This activity is designed to examine this principle whilst teaching students to measure weights and volumes. All measurements are metric. This activity can be used for 10 - 15 year olds. Students are also asked analyse the food nutrition panels on the side of products, measure the quantities and graph their data. Science and mathematics combine to teach a valuable lesson.
As a Science Nerd I created this worksheet to demonstrate how scientists can take ideas from nature and create new products. Burrs have adapted so that they can attach on to any organism passing. Students are encouraged to consider why seeds need to spread away from the parent plant to survive and therefore the advantage of this adapation. This worksheet is also designed to complement the game 'Seeding' that is based on the teenage past-time of pegging in Australia.
As a Science Nerd I created this game to demonstrate how and why seeds need to spread away from their parent plant. This game is designed to complement the worksheet Plants Inspiring Scientists and caused my students to become fasinated with plants and the adaptations they need in order to survive. It uses minimal equipment and generates a lot of fun.
Many animals have developed adaptations that enable them to survive in their environment. This is a hands on activity aimed at junior levels of science that demonstrates how spiders can spin their webs differently and therefore enhance their survival.

I have been teaching for over 20 years at all levels.
Teaching style
I like to have hand-on, inquiry based learning in my classrooms. it must be relevent to the students I teacher or they will not remember it.
My own education history
I completed a science degree at university and completed several years of biological research before finding my love of teaching. I now write textbooks and regularly contribute to teacher forums.
