Comprehensive, easy-to-follow and engaging original questions to accompany the virtual dissection that is found on https://www.whitman.edu/academics/majors-and-minors/biology/virtual-pig The students work through the website using the guided questions and respond as they complete the virtual dissection. Excellent for all Life Science, Biology and Anatomy & Physiology classes
In this POGIL-style activity, students will investigate the basic structure of monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. It also review the reactions of dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis. The students should work collaboratively to discuss the pictures and construct knowledge to answer the questions. Can be used as an introduction, review, or in place of lecture notes. I do not lecture, and only use these types of activities to work through material. Feel free to reach out if you h
In this POGIL-style activity, the students will be introduced to the basics of proteins as a macromolecule. They will be also be tasked at the end to go to a website and play the "enzyme game". The questions at the end are directly from that website.
In this project, students will investigate one of the listed disorders of the nervous system. Group members will take on the role of the doctor, patient, parent, research scientist and pharmacist to guide their research and provide an in-depth view of the disorder from multiple perspectives. The final product will be a presentation. Document includes directions, roles, planning sheets and final rubric.
In this guided inquiry activity, students construct knowledge of the cell cycle and mitosis. They begin by comparing the cell cycle to a human life cycle, color in the cell cycle, and then finish by focusing on the stages of mitosis.
Easy to follow worksheet to accompany the virtual frog dissection that is found at https://dcc.ilc.org/snc2d/14/the_frog_a_virtual_dissec/the_frog_a_virtual_dissec.html
In this guided inquiry activity, the students will explore how to use a monohybrid Punnett Square to determine the probability of genetic outcomes. The problems cover dominant/recessive traits.
In this guided inquiry activity, the students are introduced to genetics terminology. They will use PTC paper to understand how some traits are dominant and others are recessive.
In this middle school or general level high school biology lab, students are tasked to go outside and hunt for various types of beans in a grassy area outside of the school. This activity models natural selection, as the beans that are best camouflaged are the least likely to be "hunted".
In this project/presentation, students will take on the role of a doctor and present a patient with a chromosomal abnormality in a "Grand Rounds" PowerPoint presentation. This package includes directions and scoring rubric.
POGIL-inspired activity where students investigate the unique properties of carbon (very basic), and what makes a compound organic. In the second part, the students build a model of glucose. I made this using the kit from Carolina, however it would work with any molecular model kit, you may just need to make a few adjustments.
Comprehensive and engaging research project for students in a middle school physical science class or high school physics class. The students select a sport and an athlete and research all of the physics behind the sport. The end product is an MLA research paper and an oral presentation. This file includes all of the following: Detailed instructions for you and your studentsWorksheets to guide students in preliminary researchResearch Organizer/Works Cited Page for students to fill outResearch P
