Modeling is one of the key components of the Next Generation Science Standards. The purpose of this lab activity is to use packets of beans to model "atoms". Each different colored bean within a bag will represent a subatomic particle.  This activity will have students analyze pictures of bags of beans. This organic chemistry practice activity has students working virtually browsing the gallery on Google Slides or print out the slides for students to rotate around the room. As students view the gallery they identify the class (using the functional group) or homologous series if it is a hydrocarbon. Then draw the structural diagram for each. Finally determine the name of the compound. You can leave this easily as sub plans during a lab period to have students practice in a more engaging way.

Excellent for one day research or sub plans for any course studying Earth Science Natural hazards/disasters such as: Earthquakes, Tornados, Hurricanes, Volcanoes, etc. I have used in my Natural Hazards High School Elective as a summary for each type of natural disaster. You can EDIT the file (Google Doc) and have students choose a specific hazard to research and have students type right into the Google Doc.
