Practice calculating gram formula mass in the stoichiometry unit with this activity that ties in items in the home with chemistry! Can be used as sub plans to practice gram formula mass. You can do this completely digitally or print out the Google Slides and have students rotate around observing the stations. I also have some real samples next to the printed Google Slides (borax, sugar, etc). Samples include substances without parenthesis, with parenthesis, and one hydrate. Everything included i
No prep! Easy sub plans or as an extra lab period. This article introduces the Acid Base Unit with a real world application. Students learn about sinkholes, what causes them, how acid rain impacts the limestone to form sink holes. This makes a great sub plan due to requiring no prior knowledge on acids and bases. NO PREP REQUIRED. Just print and hand out OR use the Google Doc to post for students to directly type into. Everything included: Youtube Video link to introduce sinkholes, Article link
Enhance your class with jokes! A whole year of laughs in class where you can write on the board weekly. I started doing joke of the week to create a positive and encouraging environment in my classroom. It is a fun way to start the week off and students look forward to entering the room. This is organized by topic and also has a general category for any time of the year. Editable Google Doc included. You can write one a week on the board or use the printable version and post them weekly. Print
Modeling is one of the key components of the Next Generation Science Standards. The purpose of this lab activity is to use packets of beans to model "atoms". Each different colored bean within a bag will represent a subatomic particle. This activity will have students analyze pictures of bags of beans. Each bag has a certain number of subatomic particles that are counted by the student. Then the student can determine information on the bag of beans including: the atomic number, mass number, ato
This organic chemistry practice activity has students working virtually browsing the gallery on Google Slides or print out the slides for students to rotate around the room. As students view the gallery they identify the class (using the functional group) or homologous series if it is a hydrocarbon. Then draw the structural diagram for each. Finally determine the name of the compound. You can leave this easily as sub plans during a lab period to have students practice in a more engaging way.
Excellent for one day research or sub plans for any course studying Earth Science Natural hazards/disasters such as: Earthquakes, Tornados, Hurricanes, Volcanoes, etc. I have used in my Natural Hazards High School Elective as a summary for each type of natural disaster. You can EDIT the file (Google Doc) and have students choose a specific hazard to research and have students type right into the Google Doc.
NGSS Aligned Units High School Chemistry. I aligned the units I do with the new Next Generation Science Standard and New York Standards. Completely editable Google Doc for you to use.

Teaching style
I take a hands on interactive approach to teaching. I like doing activities as well as labs where students get to manipulate something. I also keep students engaged with fun ways to practice the mathematical concepts in Chemistry.
