My first 10 years of teaching were at the junior high and high school level. For the past 16 years, I have been faculty at a local community college. I have also spent about 20 years leading professional development for teachers.
The Town of Gilbert, since 2002, has seen increases in revenue generated from its recycling program. With an increase in population, Gilbert has also seen an increase in the amount of recyclables collected. Furthermore, a recent newspaper article indicated that Gilbert has gone from getting $5 per ton to $42 per ton for recyclables. Recent data showing the amount of revenue generated and the amount of recyclables collected are shown in the table below.

This set of activity activities are designed to help students to structure their thinking so that they are afforded the opportunity to make sense of the idea of division of fractions. The goal of this collection of activities is to allow the division algorithm to emerge from quality thinking and reasoning about the mathematics needed to divide fractions.
