About the store
Hi, I'm Jean-Marie — a National Board Certified Teacher with 26+ years in Special Education. I've worn a lot of hats over the years — classroom teacher, EC Facilitator, New Teacher Coordinator — and I've led hundreds of IEP, eligibility, and manifestation determination meetings along the way. I was selected from over 8,000 applicants as a member of the Governor's Teacher Network (one of 450 statewide) to lead action research on professional development in Special Education — work that shapes the PD resources I design today. After spending time in leadership roles, I made the choice to come back to the classroom — because working directly with students is where I want to be. But coming back also meant facing the same paperwork and compliance demands every SPED teacher knows too well. So I took everything I'd learned and built systems to streamline the process — less time on documentation, more time actually teaching. Those systems are what I share here, alongside ready-to-run professional development that turns hard-won compliance know-how into training your whole team can use. My focus is secondary Special Education (ages 14–21), and everything I create is professional, age-appropriate, and built around the compliance areas that matter most: FAPE, LRE, and procedural safeguards. If you're spending your weekends buried in IEP paperwork or second-guessing whether your documentation will hold up — or you're the one responsible for training the teachers who are — these resources and PD are built to take that off your plate.

Special education compliance isn’t one skill — it’s an ecosystem. Most departments train in silos: one workshop on IEPs, a separate session on discipline, maybe a handout on LRE. But compliance gaps don’t exist in isolation, and neither should your professional development. This library gives your team a complete, interconnected training and compliance system — from new-hire onboarding to ongoing LRE documentation. FAPE Legal Defense Pack | 7 SPED Compliance Tools | 34 CFR | IEP Documentation

When a parent files a state complaint or requests due process, one question determines the outcome: Can you prove FAPE was provided? Most districts can’t. Not because services weren’t delivered—but because the documentation doesn’t exist, isn’t organized, or doesn’t capture the right details. IEP meeting decisions go unrecorded. Parent contacts lack compliance timestamps. Observation walkthroughs miss critical SPED indicators. And when it’s time to defend your programming, the paper trail falls

It's August. Your new case manager starts Monday. Can they write a legally defensible PWN? Do they know what triggers a manifestation determination? Can they tell a parent the difference between consent for evaluation and consent for services? If the answer is "we'll figure it out as we go," you don't have an onboarding plan — you have a compliance liability. Procedural violations are the #1 source of due process complaints, and most of them happen because nobody taught the new hire what the law

New case managers don’t fail because they don’t care — they fail because no one hands them a system. Teaching style

I teach through inclusion — I co-plan and co-teach alongside general education teachers to make sure IEP goals actually show up in daily instruction, not just on paper. That same collaboration is how I support other teachers: I start by explaining the why behind a practice — the compliance basis and the student-centered reasoning — then model it in real instruction, work side-by-side as colleagues try it, observe what's actually happening in the room, and refine the approach together until it sticks. Teaching teachers, like teaching students, isn't a one-time hand-off; it's a cycle of explaining, doing, watching, and adjusting. I focus on building independence and self-advocacy in my students, especially at the secondary level where that matters most. Classroom management is relationship-first, and I lean heavily on positive behavior support over punitive approaches.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Selected for the Governor's Teacher Network (1 of 450 out of 8,000 applicants statewide) to conduct action research on professional development for Special Education, and presented the research at the statewide conference. Earlier in my career, I led a research project that reduced student suspension days by 47% through a decision-making program for at-risk students. But the moments that stay with me aren't the awards — they're watching my students walk across the graduation stage, running into former students out in the community living their lives, and sitting across the table from students and parents helping them map out their futures.

My own education history

Master in Varying Exceptionalities — NOVA Southeastern University, Miami, FL (2002). Bachelor in English — Florida International University, Miami, FL (1992). National Board Certified Teacher in Varying Exceptionalities. NC Standard Professional 1 licensure in English 9–12 and Cross Categorical K–12.

Additional biographical information

I started my career teaching English as a Foreign Language in Beijing before moving into Special Education in South Florida. I've taught in Florida and North Carolina across middle and high school settings. After seven years as an EC Facilitator in Durham Public Schools — coaching teachers, running compliance, and leading every type of EC meeting you can name — I chose to come back to the classroom because that's where I want to be. The resources and professional development in this store are built from over two decades of hands-on knowledge and expertise in Special Education law, compliance, and the day-to-day work of turning IEP goals into real instruction — the same explain-it, model-it, refine-it approach I use with students and the teachers I coach.compliance, and instructional practice. They are independently created on my own time, using my own tools — not developed for or on behalf of any school or district.
