The physical and chemical changes lab involves usage of chemicals and various lab equipment. This is a lab that is meant for students to learn how to use the lab equipment and to identify chemical and physical changes in chemistry. The techniques used in the procedures help students prep for the various labs that are typically performed in chemistry. There are post and pre lab questions and a conclusion so students can distinguish between chemical reactions and physical changes.
The purpose of this intro lab is for students to create a closed system that results in an equilibrium reaction. The blue flask lab involves using methylene blue, dextrose and some base. As students shake the container, it changes color and then slowly returns to equilibrium. This intro lab includes a CER and post lab questions.
The purpose of this lab is to determine whether mass will increase, decrease or stay the same with respect to the chemical reaction involving aluminum (aluminum foil pieces) and copper (II) chloride. This single replacement reaction can be used to test whether the conservation of matter law applies to an open system.
Students will use calorimetry and specific heat to determine the identity of the unknown metal block. This lab includes questions and background reading.
The purpose of this lab is to investigate properties of ionically and covalently bonded substances. Before using chemicals, students will identify whether the substance has atoms that are covalent, ionic or metallically bonded. They will then experimentally confirm this using the properties of conductivity and solubility. They will need a conductivity device. I use the Flinn conductivity probes.
Sell My Element is a poster activity that can be done in pairs or individually. They are given two elements, one metal or nonmetal. They will then try to sell one element as being better than the other. For example, "buy me, without me, your electric vehicle wouldn't function" or "don't buy X, because it can be toxic." They are encouraged to use subatomic particles, atomic structure, periodic trends and fun facts about those elements in a creative way. this includes a rubric, instructions, and a
The purpose of this lab is to: practice new lab techniques by mixing chemicals, make observations before and after reaction, and practice writing balanced equations in a laboratory setting.
This is a fun way to teach experimental design or variables. The instructions are thorough and so is the rubric. They are to identify a product they like, let's say, Starbucks. They have to convince the audience that Starbucks is the best caffeinated drink company. They develop a hypothesis, experimental design, identity variables and fabricate data. They put this info in one slide or poster. Their peers can critique it and identify components of experimental design in their notebook. The creati
This lab allows students to follow a procedure to calculate the density of a stack of pennies using water by displacement. The students record their data on a white board, students would copy the class data and use some of those trials to create a graph. The slope of the best fit line would be the density. They compare that to the densities on the given table to determine that zinc is our unknown metal.
When students learn about acids and bases, tying it to ocean acidification can appeal to them. This lab is meant for students to see what happens to calcium carbonate based shelled organisms when exposed to too much acid. This lab is inquiry based and the instructor can front load how acids react with bases.
