I have taught mainly at a continuation high school throughout my 19 years of teaching experience. I currently teach classes in Computer Applications, our main focus being Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Students will research an unsolved mystery and create a PowerPoint presentation around it. My students always enjoy this project and learn how to do an effective PowerPoint presentation in the process.
Students create a PowerPoint presentation based on a person who has contributed something to society or to history. This is a beginning project for high school or middle school students. The lesson lays out what should be included on each slide. There is a rubric for grading the project as well.
December Holidays Internet Scavenger Hunt. Students find answers to questions about holidays and celebrations in the month of December. They will research history and statistics in relation to this time of year and use Microsoft Word to give sources, pictures, and answers.
UPDATED FOR MICROSOFT WORD 2010. This unit includes 8 lessons for Microsoft Word that teach common and not so common tools. Students will learn to format correctly, draw shapes, do spell checks, cut/copy/paste, and much more. Most importantly, they will learn to follow directions! This is a valuable unit for any student wanting to get a bit more from their Microsoft Word program. Some finished product examples are included as well.
Students play Lemonade Stand and chart their decisions, earnings, losses, etc. They will use Excel to input all of this information. They will learn basic formatting in an Excel document. They will also create a bar graph that will show their profit/loss. They will learn to create a basic Excel graph.
This is the older version of MS Excel. I do have a newer version (2010) of this same project listed if that is the software you are using.
Students will research an animal on the endangered species list. They may choose to present their information in a variety of formats: Research Paper, PowerPoint presentation, or Poster. My students generally enjoy this project and love to find interesting facts and pictures of the animal they choose.

Computer Science - Technology, Environment, Other (Science)
This is an updated version of a previously posted project. This version is updated to reflect the Microsoft Office 2010 format. Students play a fun game that requires them to figure out how to make the most profit from their own "Lemonade Stand". Students will learn to create a spreadsheet that keeps track sales profit and loss. They will also create a graph that shows a sales report at the end of their "season".
Students will create their "Dream Room" using the Internet and MS Excel. They will "shop" on the internet for their bedroom items. They will list all items on an Excel document. They will also create a pie graph with the information. Students will then create a poster that showcases their "Dream Room" and their excel charts and pie graphs. Students really enjoy this project...one of their favorites!

This lesson provides step-by-step instructions on how to set up a spreadsheet for a vehicle comparison. It also includes a section on how to insert a formula and compute a loan payment. I had a really hard time finding a good lesson for this...so I adapted a couple I found and made it my own...but BETTER!
This activity requires students to use the internet to find a restaurant menu. They will then find all adjectives. Next, they create a chart using MS Word and come up with their own ideas of some synonyms.
Compilation of great interview questions. I use this the first week of school. It gives students a chance to meet their classmates and ask lots of questions. They will introduce their interviewee to the rest of the class.
