M&M Sample Survey

This is a delicious and fun way to discuss and teach how sampling methods can be used in math and science. This goes step by step and has students use data sets from other students as well. Students will make a bar graph as well as calculate averages and percentage errors and attempt to predict what should be given in any random bag of m & ms.

Orange You Glad to be Learning About Density?! 5E Learning cycle

Created by

This punny take on a density lab uses an orange, and the parts of it to demonstrate how density works. The first page gives lots of detail about all of the specifics of the lesson sequence. This is always really a fun one because the students don't realize that the whole orange with the peel floats, but when the orange is peeled, the "naked" orange sinks and the peel floats. This leads really well into a discussion on the importance of life jackets!

Editable Student Goals Tracker

This ready-to-print or assign document allows students to set 3 goals for themselves and monitor their progress throughout the year. The three goals that are there are personal, academic, and social, but those can be edited according to your preferences. There are places for students to track their progress for each quarter of the school year and have students reflect on something that they are proud of currently, and something that they can work to improve each quarter as well.

Specimens Under a Microscope

This "ready to print" handout is great for when students are first learning how to use microscopes. This encourages them to think about why scientists use microscopes and allows them to draw and see the differences between using low, medium, and high-powered lenses side by side. This lab sheet contains spaces for 6 different specimens and contains one warm-up question at the beginning and two reflection questions at the end. The handout is front and back and will print neatly without the water

Sticking Together (Water Drops on a Penny) 5E Learning Cycle

This student document (with some teacher notes in blue) takes the water drops on a penny experiment and makes that the center of a lesson cycle about surface tension, adhesion, and cohesion. This is ready to use and requires very few materials. Food coloring, paper towels, pennies, baby powder, dish soap, and pipettes are about all you need for this full lesson cycle.

Thermal Energy 5E Learning Cycle

This lesson includes teacher notes in red text throughout that probably should be deleted before printing for students. The first page is all information for the teacher and the other 5 pages walk students through a 5E Learning cycle. The Explore section guides students through an activity where they will cook hot dogs using different types of thermal energy transfers. The Evaluate section includes a quiz that is ready to go!

This ready-to-use worksheet gives students practice at counting the number of atoms for each element in chemical formulas/compounds. This is great practice before teaching balancing equations and stoichiometry! This includes a detailed explanation of how to do the assignment and also helpful tips for students on what the information presented in a chemical formula actually means.

This is a fun and engaging way to review assignments that have been done in interactive notebooks or journals as a form of review or as a teacher tool to see how students feel about certain assignments and projects. This is a great no-frills resource that is ready to be printed, assigned digitally, or can be customized to your liking. Students will choose three assignments out of their notebooks and assign them "awards" based on usefulness, perseverance/effort, and fun!
