This is a study guide for The Underground Railroad: A Novel by Colson Whitehead. The cover page provides a visual to illustrate the setting and organization of the text. Students will each be responsible for summarizing and sharing a portion of the text with the class. The study guide helps to capture students' thinking as they read as well as focus on the essential questions for the unit.

Students will identify quotes from the text that illustrate the railroad metaphor in Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad: A Novel. Next to each quote, students will describe how Whitehead's magical realism is symbolic of a greater truth about slavery in American history. Then, students will write a paragraph summing up the theme of the novel, particularly in how it relates to the novel's title. This product contains a key showing the example quotes possible for students' responses.
