Students enjoy putting together a slideshow as an alternative to a written book report. You can have them present their slideshows to the class, which is a really fun experience for everyone, any you get to grade them as they present. It is a win-win. This makes grading it so easy, and you are not "The bad guy" because the expectations are clear and either they met them or they didn't. Very simple and straight forward.
