Carla Powell Lewis has been honored at the local, state, and national levels for her excellence in education. She is the Louisiana recipient of the prestigious 2025 NEA Foundation Travelers Insurance National Teachers Award, recognizing her impact and innovation in the classroom. She was also named the National Association of University Women Woman of the Year, selected as a fellow in the Hunt Institute Inaugural Early Learning National Fellowship, and has served on the executive boards of both the Louisiana and National Councils for the Social Studies. My own education history

Carla Powell Lewis is a proud graduate of Southern University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education and a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision. She has completed additional graduate coursework in Public Administration and is currently pursuing a Master’s in History Education. Additional biographical information

Carla Powell Lewis is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a heart for public service, faith-based leadership, and community empowerment. A former President of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board and current District 3 Representative, she also leads as a minister, dance artist, education consultant, and civic volunteer. Carla is actively involved in several esteemed organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women–Metro Baton Rouge Chapter, the Junior League of Baton Rouge, and the Early Risers Kiwanis Club of Baton Rouge. She is the founding leader of Global Truth Outreach Ministries and the proud wife of Darryl, mother to one son, and “bonus mom” and grandmother to a loving blended family.
