Math Problem Solving Strategies | 8 Strategies for Independent Thinking

Solve4y
When students get stuck in math, the hardest part is often not the math itself — it’s not knowing where to start. The Math Problem Solving Strategies resource gives students clear, concrete options for approaching challenging problems with confidence. This guide focuses on how to think through a problem, not just how to get an answer. By explicitly teaching multiple strategies, students learn that there is more than one way to approach math — and that being stuck is part of the process. ⭐ W

Awards & shining teacher moments

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in leadership roles and be recognized for both teaching and instructional design excellence. During my time as a classroom teacher, I was promoted to Mathematics Department Chair and led the adoption of a new K–9 math curriculum grounded in best practices. I also coached students in MATHCOUNTS for four consecutive years, with our team placing 4th out of 75 South Carolina private and homeschool teams. Supporting students as they built confidence and persistence through competitive problem solving remains one of my proudest teaching experiences. As an instructional designer in higher education, my work has been recognized through multiple awards and nominations, including University-wide Staff Member of the Year nominations, Team of the Year, Outstanding Team Member of the Year, and an Above and Beyond Award. I’ve also been selected for national leadership and professional development opportunities focused on innovation, accessibility, and learning design. Across roles, my most meaningful “shining moments” come from helping learners and educators move through challenge with clarity, confidence, and purpose—an approach that directly informs every Solve4y resource.

My own education history

I hold a Master of Education in Instructional Design from Western Governors University. This program focused on learning science, assessment design, learner motivation, and evidence-based instructional practices. I also hold a degree in Management Information Systems with a concentration in Business Analytics, which provides a strong foundation in data analysis, systems thinking, and data-informed decision-making. This background supports Solve4y’s emphasis on progress tracking, growth visualization, and helping learners see how effort leads to improvement over time.
