This lesson helps students learn about the locations of countries in the Spanish speaking world. This is ideal for Spanish 1 after doing one or two lessons to introduce the regions, countries and their locations. In this lesson students identify countries based on descriptions. They participate in a gallery walk activity that gets them out of their seats, moving and interacting. They also learn the following vocabulary: grande, pequeño, norte, sur, este, oeste, entre This is a low prep lesson

How to Use WordReference.com (Say goodbye to Google Translate!)

This lesson teaches students how to use the online dictionary, wordreference.com. If you are anything like me, for years, I told my students to stop using Google Translate and to use wordreference.com. However year after year, I would find students using translation websites. Since I started using this less

Having a consistent routine at the start of class, can make class run smoothly and cut down on planning time. This is a weekly template that can be given to students for their "Do Now" or "Bell Ringer" work. Students write the complete date in Spanish and then copy the objective (learning target). This is a weekly template that can be given to students for their "Do Now" or "Bell Ringer" work. Students write the complete date in Spanish and then copy the objective (learning target). At the Spanish 1 level, I give the objective in English (I can...) so that every student knows what they will be learning that day. In the "hagan ahora" box, the students reply to a prompt that is on the board when they enter. ***At the end of the lesson, we return to the objective and students self assess by

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching Spanish since 2006. I have mostly taught high school students but also have experience working with adults.

Teaching style

I believe in comprehensible input, but think grammar still has a place in the language classroom. I use spaced repetition to consistently reinforce concepts and give my students multiple opportunities and ways to acquire language. I use a combination of hands on activities, group and peer work and technology in my lessons. I scaffold my lessons and build in supports so that all students can be successful language learners. Most importantly, I focus on communication and progress in the target language over perfection!

My own education history

I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish and English and a master's in adult TESOL.

Additional biographical information

I am a high school teacher at a public school in New York City. I often have classes as large as 34 students. I am passionate about teaching languages and am constantly looking to learn and grow as an educator.
