Reading Comprehension Strategy Songs

Since many learners often remember information best through song, I have written words to eight familiar tunes so that students will know the components of eight effective reading strategies. Fluency song and bookmark

This combination of a fluency song and a bookmark makes the quest for fluency more fun for all elementary learners. Experience

I have 7 years of classroom teaching experience and 15 years of ELL experience. This is my first time being an instructional coach for grades K-6, so I am celebrating my 23rd anniversary of learning with adults and children! All of my teaching days have been spent in the company of beautifully diverse individuals.

Teaching style

My teaching style continues to evolve as I strive for ways to match my skills and strengths with those of my students. Each day I try to implement creativity with a purpose by making our learning standards come to life with engagement, visuals, music, and higher order thinking skills. When success is not evident, I reflect upon the materials and approaches I have used and often create something to enhance the journey.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was a proud recipient of the Iowa City Education Association's Educator of the Year Award, and I was also the regional winner of the same honor. I have co-authored a chapter in the book Talking Classrooms and have presented at several national conferences. Last year, I received the University of Iowa's inaugural Commitment to Diversity Award.

My own education history

I graduated with highest honors from the University of Iowa with a degree in elementary education and bilingual education, an ELL endorsement, and a minor in Spanish. I also returned to the University of Iowa for my graduate work, where I earned my MA in early childhood literacy while teaching full-time. As an instructional coach for my district, I have access to extensive training in the areas of comprehension, fluency, phonemic awarenenss, phonics, vocabulary, and assessment.
