Piecewise Function Fun

Created by
Stacey Schulz
This one-day lesson is good for early exploration of the piecewise function and how to obtain the graph of a piecewise function. Concepts such as domain and range and function notation are strengthened or assessed depending upon the learner. It is an activity which leads the learner step-by-step with group work possible and concludes with a whole-class discussion summary.

About the store

Experience

I have taught for 21 years at Liberty High School.

Teaching style

The students call me crazy! I guess you could say I teach by..... going with the moment. When an idea crosses my mind that may help even one student in the class with the concept at hand, I think it through about a minute and then go for it. Sometimes this results in uproarious laughter at the time. Then months or even years later, when chatting with a student, the incident is recalled and laughter is heard, again.

My own education history

I attended Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia where I was taught by my father for two years. He became my greatest inspiration to pursue a career teaching mathematics. He focused on the importance of definitions in the formal geometry course,so I grew to feel powerful writing mathematical proofs. This gave me confidence to look into fields of study that contained lots of mathematics classes. I graduated with my BS Ed from University of Missouri-Columbia having learned from many more great mathematicians. I pursued a mathematics master from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg gaining 27 rigorous hours there, including 3 in topology which led me to hold that branch of mathematics in high regard. Finally, I achieved a MA C&I from University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Additional biographical information

I have three children that continue to add joy and motion to my days. My hobbies include piano playing, quilting, riding my HPV, and gardening.
