My first graders have been learning how to "balance the scale" with balanced equations. Here are 4 versions of a balanced equation template for students to use for practice.
I like to copy these practice templates and put them into heavy-duty shiny sheet protectors so that they can be used over and over with dry erase markers.
Each week I give my first grade students a single sheet of paper (trying to conserve supplies!) with a daily sentence on the front, and this daily math practice on the back for morning seat work. They quickly learn the routine of the practice, since the skills required are the same each week. Before copying, I write in the numbers that I wish to focus on daily.
This could easily be used for a weekly homework packet or even for a math center.
