Students will visit 8 stations to explore different properties of density. This comes between metric measurement and the density laboratory investigation. May take 2-3 days to complete. Skills needed to be successful on the lab are fostered in this exploration. The stations include:
Determine the Density of Clay
Determine the Density of Quartz
Determine the Density of Water
Determine the Range in a Data Set
Determine the Change in Density Due to Thermal Expansion
Calculating the Volume of a Sph
Culminating lab after a 1-2 week introduction to the concept of density which should include practice, discovery, math problems, measuring, and use of equipment including graduated cylinders, triple beam balances, water displacement, and mass/volume comparisons. This is best used with the density kits found here: http://www.pitsco.com/Science/Project_Kits/Grades_9-12/Density_Kit Students also introduced to the density of rocks in the earth's crust, so three crustal rock samples per group must al
A good introduction lab to the methodology of forensics. Students should have an understanding of data collection, chart and graph construction, and writing conclusions. No materials beyond metric meter sticks are required.
