This lesson will guide students through the basics of using the online coding program Scratch. As they learn new techniques and skills in Scratch, they'll be developing a deeper knowledge of patterning with guided tasks, challenges, handouts and hands on activities in Scratch.

This is the year long plan I used to teach a full day of STEM, once a week, to a grade 1-3 class. In the plan are the key concepts being covered, the Ontario curriculum expectations, a list of the activities and a list of the required material for each week. In this lesson, students will learn to recognize the value of optimizing surface area when presented with a fixed volume. Students will achieve this using the two provided handouts which guide them through an inquiry based lesson in which they develop strategies for optimizing values.
