This lesson uses a website to see interactive gears and learn how to calculate the gear ratio using the number of teeth on the driver gear and follower gear. The also learn about a gear train; specifically a gear up train and gear down train and when each might be useful. Students will use gear manipulatives to actually visualize they way gears provide mechanical advantage and change the direction of the force. This product includes just the interactive journal template and lesson outline.

This lesson is the introduction to the structure of bridges. This lesson includes the lesson dialogue, the student's interactive journal template, and a Prezi. The Prezi reviews that basic bridge terminology and forces at work on different types of bridges. The students will learn basic vocabulary terms and parts of bridges, and will write those definitions in addition to labeling them on some example bridge drawings.

This product is the lesson, standards met, and materials needed to introduce students to the wedge, a simple machine. Included in this is the template for students to add to their interactive journal.

This product includes the lesson for introducing what pulleys are, and how they work as a simple machine. It includes the journal template for students to add to their interactive journal, and visual aids for learning the formulas and vocabulary for the lesson.

This lesson uses the data collected from the ASPIRE Simple and Complex Machines website (in the Intro to Pulleys Part 1 lesson) and includes an activity that requires the students to practice analyzing the data represented on three graphs. Students will focus on how to answer questions and learn information by a studying a visual representation of data.

The lesson briefly covers the history of catapults and then gives students an opportunity to build a catapult using the Engineering Design Process to create a design that meets the requirements.

This product teaches about the concept of relationships between variables by looking at data of inclined planes and the force required with different lengths. I use a great website called ASPIRE Simple and Complex Machines that allows students to manipulate an inclined plane and collect the data from each change. They will practice graphing that data and then analyzing it. This includes the lesson, standards met, interactive journal template, informational signs and sorting cards.

This lesson follows the lesson where students had the opportunity to learn about loads, forces and materials in a structure. Now they are applying that knowledge and acting as Engineering Inspectors for their own School Building. A template is included for the STEM interactive notebook.

This lesson is an opportunity to focus on both Engineering and Literacy standards. The lesson is supported by an article titled Quake Proof Bridge from the December 9, 2013 issue of Scholastic Science World magazine.
