Physical Sciences, Electricity Cornell Annotated NOTESCocreated with "Electricity NOTES". I don't like lecturing so I have my materials synched where students are visually cued on what to write. Key terms in the texts they need to jot are colored blue, Reminders on what to color and graph are built in as well. Students spend a minimal time writing and more time listening. The Cornell system is an excellent learning tool. Annotating allows for a clean document without sacrificing ownership. Introd

Science Math: 3 Variable Problems KIOSK

This is an interactive simulation on how to solve 3 variable math problems. There are dozens of them in science (F=ma, D=m/v, etc...). If a student doesn't know how to solve them, their science grade suffers... But it's their math that needs the boost. I created this unit as a patch to show some of my lower performing students how to solve easy math problems. Those that "get" Algebra won't really benefit from this tutorial . Unfortunately, when I created this file, I didn't have many kids in my

Lab: Science Inquiry and KNex Landers KIOSK

In 2008, the entire 11th grade class of Mainland high school ran a lab to determine the ideal shape for a hypothetical mail delivery device called a, "KNex Lander". The original design (made of KNex... of course) was created by a pair of Embry Riddel engineering students. Students tested the design, then they tested a litany of improvements on that design. This file simulates that activity using the actual data generated. It follows the process from measurement, through data crunching to graphi

Lab: Science Inquiry. Washers KIOSK

In 2008, the entire 11th grade class of Mainland high school ran a lab to determine whether there were factors which made a person a better player of the popular game, "Washers"... (Note: this is VASTLY different than the drinking game called "Quarters"... Really... Vastly different.) Students completed a form, then played a series of ""Washer" games. Their data and scores were accumulated and analyzed. This file simulates that activity using the actual data generated. It follows the process fr

Lab: Physical and Chemical Changes in Pennies KIOSK

This is an interactive simulation of a series of labs I run over the course of several weeks (unimaginatively) called, "Penny Labs". In the series, students make, "clean", "green", "silver", "gold", and "hollow" pennies, collecting tangible examples for demonstrating the difference between Physical and Chemical Changes. This simulation follows the process from measurement, through data crunching to graphing, and analysis. Students run through all the labs in their entirety. The file can be

Molecules Intro KIOSK

This is an interactive simulation introducing Molecules. It follows my "Atoms" kiosk. By running through this tutorial, students will understand how molecules are written. The role of electrons in forming molecules is introduced, along with other concepts specific to this topic such as the distinction between a molecule and a compound. The file can be projected as a class activity but if you have access to a computer lab, it's ideally suited for students to run the simulation on their own. Onc

Atoms, Intro KIOSK

Atoms are the fundamental starting point of chemistry. This interactive lesson explains the atom's history from Democritus to Rutherford, The atom's three principle components (protons, neutrons and electrons) are introduced as some Periodic Table basics such as Atomic Number and Atomic Mass. The file can be projected as a class activity but if you have access to a computer lab, it's ideally suited for students to run the simulation on their own. Once properly protected (instructions on how

Chemical Reaction Intro, KIOSK

This is an interactive simulation introducing the basics of Chemical Reactions. It follows both my "Atoms" and "Molecules" kiosks. By running through this tutorial, students will understand how chemical reactions are written. and what they mean within the context of the Law of Conservation of Matter. It introduces some vocabulary (like, "combustion" and "decomposition" reactions, etc...) but the principle emphasis is on the conceptual idea that all matter in the universe has to be accounted for

Lab: Hot Spots and Plate Tectonics KIOSK

This is an interactive simulation of a paper lab which uses the concept of Hot Spots to deduce tectonic plate movements (citation within the file as a weblink). The activities are engaging. The science is sound. Students cover data acquisition, measurement, graphing, and draw conclusions on how fast the tectonic plate that Hawaiian Islands sit on it is traveling. Physical Sciences NOTES

NOTE: The Zip file contains 12 pretty elaborate Physical Sciences Power Point Presentations. I make them available for FREE because I have no idea where a lot of the stuff I've gathered through the years came from. I also have a bunch of super heroes and cartoon characters strewn throughout that some lawyer might take issue with if I did charge... Soooo, you can use these Power Points with my compliments all you want. They're really fun. Elsewhere in my "store" are the annotated Cornell Notes

About the store

Experience

30+ years in classrooms throughout the state of florida

Teaching style

I was educated as a scientist. I fell into teaching when the incompatibility of studying black bears for months on end in the Everglades and a successful marriage hit me. I (correctly) chose the wife... So my students "do" stuff instead of listening to me. When they have to read, I make sure it's something worth reading. When they have to write, I make sure they know it's worth writing... When they sit in front of a computer, they're going to be entertained AND educated. Never did get the hang of "busy work".

Awards & shining teacher moments

Nearly 40 years of teaching a myriad of amazing students! Everything else is noise.

My own education history

University of Miami: B.Sc, (1984) Biology, w/Chemistry minor University of South Florida: M.Ed (1987) Science Curriculum and Instruction National Board Certification (2009)

Additional biographical information

I've taught every grade from 6-12. I've taught (almost) every science subject the state of Florida offers. I've taught in Tampa, Miami, Panama City, Pierson, Daytona Beach, and Ormond Beach... 15 schools. I guess I can't hold a job down.
