I have taught STEM for over 5 years in both Elementary (K-4) and Middle School (5-8).
STEM does not have to be complicated, sometimes the simplest experiments created the most meaningful learning.
Bundle includes: Mechanical Properties of Matter Introduction - Vocab and Descriptions for wall 4 Mechanical Properties of Matter Test Procedures - Hardness, Impact (Firmness/Softness), Compression and Tensile Strength. End of unit assessment with answer key
Students will explore and understand the concept of hardness as a mechanical property of matter. They will follow a simple test procedure to determine the hardness property of a phone screen protector using common household objects. They will reflect on their findings and answer critical thinking questions.
Students will explore and understand the concept of Tensile Strength as a mechanical property of matter. They will follow a simple test procedure to determine the tensile strength of various types of grocery bags. They will reflect on their findings and answer critical thinking questions.
Students will explore and understand the concept of Compression as a mechanical property of matter. They will follow a simple Compression test procedure to determine the compressibility of a variety of common objects. They will reflect on their findings and answer critical thinking questions.
Students will explore and understand the concept of Softness/Firmness as a mechanical property of matter. They will follow a simple Impact test procedure to determine the softness/firmness of a piece of foam. They will reflect on their findings and answer critical thinking questions.
Companion end of unit assessment for the Mechanical Property of Matter test procedures: Hardness, Tensile Strength, Impact (Softness/Firmness) and Compression.
Brief introduction to the concept of Mechanical Properties of Matter: Hardness, Tensile Strength, Compression and Softness/Firmness. Each page contains a description of each property to display on your classroom wall. Also included: Test Procedure and Mechanical Engineering explanations.
