STEM with STACY

The students will be introduced to Iggy Peck, Architect through a story map and character traits ditto. They will begin to explore what an architect does and look at bridge design, focusing on geometry. The students will have 3 hands-on labs to complete this unit: "Which paper column can hold the most books?", "Build a truss bridge using craft sticks" and "Bridge building STEM challenge using EDP." Students will read the book, The Tree Lady. They will explore Katherine Olivia Sessions' character traits, see a video clip of Balboa Park, learn the importance of using a map by exploring a digital image of Balboa Park, draw their own map and finally using the EDP to create a 3D model of a map. *Please note the comment in the Powerpoint for the video clip.

Students will be introduced to engineering through creating a catapult. The goal is to follow the engineering design process while completing the lab. I have added a bonus lab on engineering artwork out of recyclables.
