Students use the chart to search for, try out, and locate words whose value is exactly one dollar! Teacher directions for use and strategies students may use are provided along with the chart for students. Students will use their math skills to practice adding while searching for and trying to find their dollar words. Strategies for determining dollar words will come naturally as students begin to identify words!

Experience

I have been teaching for 34 years at the elementary level and 15 years at the university level. I am currently a fifth grade teacher by day and an adjunct university instructor at night!

Teaching style

I believe in helping students to discover their own learning. I create lessons that allow students to work through their own problems and find solutions in team settings. I also create a risk-free learning environment so all students can contribute and feel free to share ideas!

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have been recognized by my school district as their teacher of the year. The governor of Florida awarded me the Florida Shine Award for STEM teaching. Last year, I was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science teaching by President Obama. I have also been honored as a Part Time Instructor at the University of South Florida and received the Elementary Science Teacher of the Year award from the Florida Association of Science Teachers.

My own education history

I am a graduate of Long Island University with a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education. I received my Master's degree in Math and Science from the University of South Florida. I also hold my National Board Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist and am ESE, ESOL, and Reading certified.
