This project was used as a performance task to assess students' understanding of transcription and translation, in the context of a murder/kidnapping mystery. Students had to collect DNA from the crime scene, analyze it, and determine the suspect and victim based on the traits they found. This is a molar mass activity to do on Halloween in a Chemistry class. The students are given bags of elements/compounds that they have to determine the molar mass of. Then they have to perform a mole calculation to convert between moles and grams.
This is the flame test lab procedure and information for a lab write-up (scaffolded with descriptions of what is needed for each part of the lab write-up).
