I like to think of the verb HABER as a cheat code when using the past tense in Spanish. It's much easier to learn than the Preterite, and honestly, I hear it used frequently by natives. What a great way to start off the year! Students do not realize how many words in Spanish they already know. Give them self-confidence by starting off the year with 50 cognates. Most of them will easily figure out the English equivalent. Then tell them to go home and tell their parents how much vocabulary they learned today in class! Play Spanish Jeopardy with students!!! I found this template free online and then built a game into it. I break students up into three groups and they ring the bell to answer questions just like in the real game! They love it! This game includes both Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy and usually takes a day to play each. Topics include vocabulary, Capitals, Culture, Translation, Gender and Number Agreement and more!!!!
