About the store
I have been teaching urban students for 17 years. I started as a teaching assistant and went to school to get my Masters and become a certified teacher. I have been teaching 5th grade math for 10 years and have developed some systems to simplify difficult-to-learn concepts...like Long Division. I believe students can learn through direct instruction and repetition. Therefore, my worksheets include a lot of opportunity for independent practice as well as partner work. I love seeing the look on students faces when they finally master a difficult concept. It makes all the hard work worth it!

Scaffold Long Division 2-digit by 1-digit

Students begin to grasp the concept of the Standard Algorithm for Long Division by working the algorithm side by side with a Skip Count Line. This is an important step in mastering the Standard Algorithm for Division (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down). After students master this, they slowly add more digits to the dividend and the divisor until they are doing 4-digit dividends, and 2-digit divisors, (by the end of 5th grade). The packet includes Classwork, Homework, Exit Ticket, and a b

Teaching style

I believe teaching is both science and art. Each student is unique and will respond differently to each lesson. I also believe strongly in identifying each student's level of mastery. We need to teach students at their level, (Vygotsky called it the "Zone of Proximal Development"). Knowledge is built like a pyramid. Students cannot build the second level until the first level is solid. I believe in constructing strong conceptual foundations to build upon. You will see that some of my worksheets may seem overly simplified. I assure you, there are students who need to build those basic blocks in order to master difficult concepts

Awards & shining teacher moments

I am a member of the Superintendent's Teacher Advisory Council in my district. We are a group of dedicated teachers who meet bi-monthly with the superintendent in order to discuss important topics facing our district and develop solutions. I am also a Teacher Leader in my building. I am tasked with finding best practices for math instruction and acting as a resource for other teachers.

My own education history

I went to undergrad at Binghamton University for Economics. After struggling in the job market for 6 years I decided to apply to be a teaching assistant. I immediately knew I made the right choice. I loved working with kids and went to night school to get my Masters in Education from SUNY Oswego. My district is dedicated to continuous professional development and we are piloting new programs in data analysis and blended learning.

Additional biographical information

I come from a large family with 5 brothers and 1 sister. My father is a Vietnam War Veteran who instilled a sense of hard work and service to others. My mother always encouraged us to find something we love and be the best at it. I take art classes in my spare time and hope to someday teach art to children. I am happily married and enjoy coaching my 7 year old daughter's soccer team.
