This PARCC-like activity asks students to pick the best descriptor that contrasts the reactions of Eben and Curzon to the British defeat. They then have to choose the best piece of text evidence to support the descriptor that they chose. This is set up very PARCC-like with Part A and Part B questioning strategies.
There are two different worksheets with answer key! I use the first one to teach the concept and the second one as a demonstration of learning.

I used this to practice making inferences from Esperanza Rising. The specific task they were asked to do was to make inferences based on how various characters are responding to challenges using text evidence. This was done as a whole group activity to practice our skills.
