I used this resource to teach making inferences within Esperanza Rising. This only covers the first few chapters of the text.

Forge by Laurie Halse Anderson This PARCC-like activity asks students to pick the best descriptor that contrasts the reactions of Eben and Curzon to the British defeat. They then have to choose the best piece of text evidence to support the descriptor that they chose. This is set up very PARCC-like with Part A and Part B questioning strategies. This PowerPoint corresponds with 2nd Grade Superkids Reading Curriculum. The PowerPoint is designed for co-teaching which is why there are hearts or stars at the bottom of each slide. However, those can be removed and the slide show is fully editable!

I used this to practice making inferences from Esperanza Rising. The specific task they were asked to do was to make inferences based on how various characters are responding to challenges using text evidence. This was done as a whole group activity to practice our skills. There are two pages technically to the document but the second page is blank.

I used this choice board after our students had read and studied the book No Summit out of Sight. This was a final project. I have an editable version of this, just ask for it!

Learning targets are created for Word Work, Reading, and Writing for the entire Goodbye Summer Unit. Editable!

I cut out, laminated, and hole-punched the top left corner of these cards. I then put these on a binder ring for my newcomer to use. I taught the student how to show their classroom teacher the card for which they needed.

Using the text Home of the Brave, students worked in groups after the mini-lesson to try making inferences with this passage. This could also work as an assessment or DOL at the end of the lesson.
