This is my 12th year teaching 4th grade in the public school system. I student taught in a 5th grade classroom and have worked with students of all needs from special education to gifted and talented.
My students love to play this fun game to practice their facts. I've included the directions and two levels of play. Print the games on cardstock and laminate for future use or just slip them into communicators so that your students can use their dry erase markers to play again and again.
Print these cards on cardstock, laminate and cut, and then have the students match the pairs face up. Have the students match every blue card with a red card. Students will have a great discussion about factors and multiples and prime and composite numbers while matching the cards. When they have matched the pairs, have the students make two separate arrays placing the cards face down this time while they play a game of memory, drawing one card from each array until they find all the matches.
Students use the population maps of the US to solve challenging rounding questions. I've included two levels to this activity. Students will round into the millions place in each level of the activity. Students are also asked to use a map key in this activity. Some questions ask for the students to estimate the total population and/or find the difference between two state's populations. US maps are not included but can easily be found on the internet and printed/displayed on the board.
Print these cards and place them around the room for a "silent scavenger hunt". Or, the kids can use them as game cards for a generic board game. Students may also enjoy pretending to "be the teacher" and read the questions to their partner while their partner solves on a slate.
I write these phrases and number sentences/expressions on craft sticks. Instead of just "pulling a stick" with a student's number on it to get the students to participate, I pull the stick and say the math sentence. It keeps the students on their toes and infuses math into all subject areas.
