Adding and subtracting similar and dissimilar fractions is on the British Columbia and New York curricula spanning Grade 4 to 7. This information is in booklet format so that it is a discrete unit and to give the student practice in making notes by creating a journal. It is a how-to manual that will complement any standard text. It is not a problem-solving or testing device. Using legal-sized sheets, print the odd pages. Re-insert the printed sheets so as to print on the blank sides. Print

This is a topic that is introduced in Grade 4 in the US and in Grade 5 in Canada where the format 4R5 is used for quotients in Grade 4. This lesson (with answers) covers all of the routines that the student needs to learn. You can direct the student to the parts that are on the part of the curriculum you are using.

Mathematics for Grade 4 Many people think math is dull. I hope they find this whole book exciting. This is the first of a series of chapters from my book. It has been split up to fit the uploading limitations. The "Article" offered for sale has the lessons, supplementary pages and answers. You need them for cut-and-paste objects and for information about learning difficulties. This book, Mathematics for Grade 4, follows the current curriculum guide.

The vertical algorithm format here is for these younger grades. There are many children who very vague concepts about numbers. Although the work level is for Grade 3, you may find older students without these words or concepts. One of the students' performance tasks is to explain what they are doing. These worksheets are to give them the words to do that explaining for adding and subtracting. Each section is repeated. The first copy is to read and discuss. The second copy is for filling in the blanks. minuend "that amount to be diminished", subtrahend

In Grade 4 students use models and templates for writing. This unit is about reading word problems and writing solutions. It explains the difference between the Who? What? When? Where? How? of the news report format and the If-Then-Go-So pattern of problem solving. This format is expanded in later grades and acts as a foundation for expository writing (essays) of all sorts. It is the pivot on which Science, Math and English are Core Subjects.

About the store

Experience

I have had a wide range of teaching experience from non-readers to first year university writing.

Teaching style

I start with the curriculum and then try to fill in the gaps as they come up. And they do come up. I invented my colour code for teaching grammar because my students were a) terrified of grammar and b)had forgotten everything that they might have learned. I found that students who were having difficulties in math had vision or hearing problems, or reading/writing problems. A lot of the mystery comes from not recognizing the kind of difficulty.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My own students credit me with teaching them grammar, or getting them through school, or helping them to get work.

My own education history

The best bit of advice that I received was this: The student takes three times the amount of time that the teacher does to complete a task/test. Always take your own test to find out a) how much time to allow for the student to write and b) how much space the student needs to complete the answer.
