During the beginning of the money unit that I teach to my first graders, we always focus on identification before we start counting like coins. I pull out these mats every time to help my students sort coins. The first mat we use is the one with the pictures of the coins. Once students can successfully sort using this mat, I pull out the other one with only the names of the coins. It is your choice whether you let students sort real or fake coins.
