The Grade 3 ELA OST otherwise known as the AIR Assessment requires students to write an informational essay using at least two text sets and gathering information from those text to formulate a response to the prompt. As we all know the stakes are high with the new common core test. In the state of Ohio, third grade students take the AIR Assessment. After careful review of Florida AIR and Ohio Portal Practice Test, I have written a practice informational text set to use with your students.

This is a great activity to teach opinion writing through colorful Post Its and an OREO bookmark that gives the students a clear example how to produce a 4-5 paragraph essay. This product should be used after the standard is explicitly taught the week prior and then as independent practice. I give my students 10 minutes daily to complete and then we review it as a class. It is vital that we teach our third grade students how to take a standardized test that includes multiple choice, short answer and extended response. I would recommend giving students 50 minutes to complete the fictional and nonfiction passages.

This Problem of the Day is for one week over the Ohio Learning Standard that is highly tested on the third grade state test. Your students will have two questions Monday - Friday over the standard L.3.5 that are aligned by using the question stems from previous grade 3 ELA assessments.
