My name is Stacy Fillerup, and I’m a homeschooling mom of seven children. We began our homeschool journey ten years ago when my second son began struggling with reading in first grade. We suspected dyslexia, as it runs on both sides of our family. By the end of that school year, he asked me a question that broke my heart: "Mom, am I stupid?"
That moment changed everything.
When my son first said he felt stupid, alarm bells rang in my head. I knew, from family experience, the long-term damage a lack of confidence in learning can cause. We made the decision to homeschool—and while it hasn’t been easy, it’s been more than worth it.
I’ve learned to love learning alongside my children. I’ve seen them overcome challenges and thrive. And I’ve met many families who, like us, chose the harder right to do what’s best for their unique learners.
There are so many resources and approaches available today that help children learn on their own timelines, grow in confidence, and play to their strengths.
I became determined to help my son not only learn to read and write, but also regain his confidence and discover his strengths. That determination led me on a journey I never anticipated—a journey that has shaped the way I teach all seven of my children. Each one has their own unique learning style, and I’ve embraced different approaches, therapies, and methods to meet their individual needs.
