I have several dyslexic learners at my house. One of our favorite games for b d reversals is the Dabbing Devil. It is a multi-sensory approach to help minds remember which letter to use. Multi-sensory helps to retain information, enables easier recall, works for different learning styles, increase involvement, better cognitive processing. The devil really wants to be bad, but if we get it wrong, we dab! When a letter is reversed or we are learning letters, we dab. If the letter needs to be a b,

Teaching style

Over the years, I’ve come to embrace a few key truths: 1. Confidence is the key to learning. 2. Learning is personal. It doesn’t follow a one-size-fits-all timeline. 3. What others label a disability may actually be a hidden strength. 4. The best learning is multi-sensory. 5. Learning should be fun!

My own education history

I am a college graduate with a degree in Associate of Science. I have twelve years' experience in the accounting field. I have home schooled my children for ten years in a variety of classes and interests. I have taught at my home school co-op for eight years in a variety of subject. I am training to be an Orton-Gillingham certified tutor.

Additional biographical information

My name is Stacy Fillerup, and I’m a homeschooling mom of seven children. We began our homeschool journey ten years ago when my second son began struggling with reading in first grade. We suspected dyslexia, as it runs on both sides of our family. By the end of that school year, he asked me a question that broke my heart: "Mom, am I stupid?" That moment changed everything. When my son first said he felt stupid, alarm bells rang in my head. I knew, from family experience, the long-term damage a lack of confidence in learning can cause. We made the decision to homeschool—and while it hasn’t been easy, it’s been more than worth it. I’ve learned to love learning alongside my children. I’ve seen them overcome challenges and thrive. And I’ve met many families who, like us, chose the harder right to do what’s best for their unique learners. There are so many resources and approaches available today that help children learn on their own timelines, grow in confidence, and play to their strengths. I became determined to help my son not only learn to read and write, but also regain his confidence and discover his strengths. That determination led me on a journey I never anticipated—a journey that has shaped the way I teach all seven of my children. Each one has their own unique learning style, and I’ve embraced different approaches, therapies, and methods to meet their individual needs.
