About the store
I have been teaching for 11 years; the first year in technology and the last ten have been in 5th grade. I really enjoy the interaction with the students. I always say that in 5th grade the students are mature enough to have a great discussion, but still young enough to like stickers. They keep me young and sometimes I feel like I'm the one learning. I teach all subjects and spend much of my time free researching and creating lessons that will continue to challenge and motivate my students and follow the common core standards. The biggest compliment for me is when I share my work with my colleagues and they actually use it and like it. Reading is BIG in my classroom! We are always busy reading, whether it is shared, guided, independent, read-a-louds, or literature circles. My goal each year is to try to convert the non-readers into lovers of literature

Students create a Rube Goldberg Compound Machine that pops a balloon (this will work for making any compound machine), but first they have to fill out a Project Design Idea Form and then a Project Design Form & Blueprint. Once these are all approved, they can begin the fun of constructing the machine. Students are quick to discover that their blueprints don’t generally work exactly the way the envisioned it. Th

Use this worksheet to determine the main idea of an informational/expository text. I use this with my “Time for Kids” magazine weekly. The first day I introduce how to write a “Gist Summary” (a 20-word summary) and then on the following day I explain and model how to fill out the analysis form using the main article of the magazine. This worksheet is a good way to address text structure and look closely at an article. You can find information all over the Internet on how to create a “Gist”. You

Put your students in control of what they are to do with this non-fiction chart. You tell the students how many are required (you can even give different reading levels more or less than the rest of the class) and the due date and the rest is left up to them. I have used this project-based chart several times throughout the past years and find that the students really enjoy making decisions with this assignments. Some of the activities to choose from: Writing their own questions Illustrating a

This is a fun activity to use in your Civil War unit. Students will not mind exploring the internet, books, and articles looking for Civil War commanders on both sides of the war. As they are researching for the right people to make put on their cards, they are also learning more about the people, battles, and causes of the war. My students enjoy doing these every year! You can make it an activity for one day or several.
