After reading the story, Cora Cooks Pancit, by Dorina Gilmore, students will write their own narrative using this story as a mentor text. In this bundle, included is a narrative writing booklet to use to organize the writer's thinking through the writing process. In the booklet, students will have a mind map, graphic organizer, first draft writing lines, as well as a revise/edit check list to assist young writers perfect their craft in writing narratives.
Use this booklet to lead your students through informative writing, specifically writing a biography. Includes guiding questions, graphic organizers, space for first draft writing with subtitles: -Introduction -Basic Facts -Childhood/adulthood -Education/career -Major life achievements Lastly, there is a Revise/Edit page with a check-list and space for two editing partners. Students will feel successful and be proud of showing the writing process with an easy to follow along booklet.
Specifically to help students add dialogue into a narrative, once their story is already written. Use the codes, D1, D2, and D3 to insert dialogue into a story during the revising and editing phase of the writing process. See "Carolyn and Mom Survive the Mauna Loa Eruption" for the narrative that these dialogue samples fit into.
Use this exit ticket to provide your students with an opportunity to quickly process and show what they've learned. This will also give you, as the teacher an insight as to their misunderstandings and interests.
