This handout gives explicit, step-by-step directions for solving one-step word problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Instead of a vague instruction for the student to "choose the operation," this procedure uses fact family triangles which simplifies the process because students need only to decide between two choices: addition/subtraction or multiplication/division.
