About the store
I have been teaching in the intermediate grades, as both a general classroom teacher, as well as a special education teacher. I have used a variety of programs and learning approaches throughout my career. Like many, I have often worked in places where there has been a lack of resources to support state standards or district initiatives. Therefore I have an extensive collection of teacher made materials. I hope some of the things I have created can be useful to you, and save you the time it takes to create them.

Grade 5 Informational Text Lesson Plans for the Common Core
This packet includes formally written lesson plans and the suggested student worksheets for the following Grade 5, Common Core, Informational Text Standards:

Character, Setting, Plot Dice
(THESE DICE ARE INCLUDED IN MY TEACHING REALISTIC FICTION RESOURCE PACKET) Use these fun dice in a reading group or with pairs. The students cut apart the dice template (or you can do it). As they are reading their assigned reading, the can stop along various points to roll the dice. The dice generate questions that pertain to either character, setting, or plot... one die for each concept. I have always had a lot of success, good discussion, and student excitement when using these.

Math Facts Game: Who Has My Number?
This fast paced math fact game requires students to use basic recall of multiplication and division facts. The instructions are simple. Just give each student 1 card (or 2 for a challenge if you have extra cards). Choose a student to begin by reading the fact that appears on his card. The other students must listen to determine if they have the answer that matches the previous student's card. I so, that student gives the his correct answer, then reads the fact from his card. Common Core Tall Tale Unit Resource Packet
This 20 page packet includes resources and printables that will help guide you through a unit on tall tales. The packet includes important vocabulary and elements of tall tales, and includes prereading, reading, and writing resources. It is specifically aligned with the 5th grade reading and writing common core standards, however the resources could be used with grades 3-6. A simple teacher guideline has been included in the packet that offers suggestions on how to use the resources provided.

Get to Know Graphic Aids Activity (included in my teaching info. text packet)
In this activity, students learn 6 different types of graphic aids: flow chart, time line, map, table, charts and graphs, and pictures with captions. They are given student friendly definitions of each, and then are given a second sheet that has an identified example of each. The students must cut apart the definitions and examples and try to match them. After their answers have been checked, they can paste the definitions with the examples onto a separate sheet to be used as a reference.

Poetry Tracker (included in my teaching poetry resource packet)
This sheet can be used to track the poetry your class reads throughout their unit. It helps the students record the poems that they have read, and also encourages them to focus on the important elements of poetry as they track them on the recording chart. It is a great tool to use throughout the unit, and also to refer at the end of the unit. It can be used whole group, with pairs, or could even be used as an assessment if completed independently.

This set of five graphic organizers provides the organizational images needed to dive into teaching informational text. The organizers are based on the 5 text structures: description, temporal sequence, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and problem/solution. Each organizer also lists the key words that can help students identify the particular text structure that is being focused on.

Figurative Language Activity Center (also available in my poetry pack)
This activity center can be used with your whole class, or in small teacher led or independent groups. The activity has a camping theme, and is made up of 20 cards that each have an example of figurative language on them. The cards can be sorted into 4 groups: metaphors, similes, idioms, and personification. You can make the activity self checking by simply adding a color code to the back of the cards, allowing the students to check their work when they're done sorting.

These 8x10 printable pin ups offer an eye catching heading and description of the reading strategy you may be focusing on for the week. I keep this packet together by my reading table, and can easily post the strategy that I am focusing on with my group. Autumn Metaphor/Simile Activity
(THIS PAGE IS INCLUDED IN MY POETRY RESOURCE PACKET) Use this activity in pairs or small groups to bring out the figurative language in your students. The organizer provided gives the students an example of a metaphor, simile, personification and onomatopeia. It then asks the students to pull autumn themed objects from a bag and try to write figurative sentences for the objects. Benchmark Assessment Reading Group Student Tracker
When our schools was using the Benchmark Assessment System, I used this simple organizer to chart the students' activity during a reading group. I had a separate chart for each reading group, and was able to informally document their progress on the things they would be assessed on for the Benchmark Assessment. This paper can be easily adapted to fit any reading assessment.

Teaching style
Hands on, cooperative learning approaches seem to be what I gravitate towards. However, I think using a variety of styles in lesson planning is beneficial to the students.
