This is a report on the text features found in non-fiction books. It should be used similar to a scavenger hunt. Students are to look for text features within their independent reading level books. Students will also identify facts learned from reading. It's important to preview the book that each student will use to ensure there are text features in the book. This Reader's Workshop poster can be used as a teacher tool or a whole class tool. It's useful in having a visual for the teacher and the students to see as they accomodate themselves to the Reader's Workshop Routine, especially at the beginning of the year. It includes the steps taken through the Reader's Workshop instruction and time allotted for each part. It also has an I do, We do, and You do to emphasize the student/teacher parts in the process. This activity supports Unit 8 in First Grade investigations but can be adapted to be used in K or 2. Since measurement is covered around this time of year, using Easter egg candies are fun to incorporate. You can also use Swedish fish candies to go along with the "measuring fish" lessons in Unit 8. Prepare a small baggie of candies for each child or use the "fun size" bags for easier preparation. Have stations set up or have these items available at tables for students to use:
