Jennifer Serravallo’s Reading Strategies BookSupporting Comprehension in Nonfiction: Determining Main Topic(s) and Idea(s)This document was designed to streamline Serravallo's work to target strategies just for nonfiction. Reading the text set for assessments such as the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) is a huge issue for many students. Complex text is being presented and the old standard, "The main idea is usually the first or the last sentence in the paragraph" just doesn't work. As ELA

This lesson set was designed to be at the low end of the 4-5 Lexile band and toward the upper end of the word count band based on the test specs for the Florida Standards Assessment. It was written to hit both ELA standards and Social Studies standards for the state of Florida. The analysis provides the teacher with the opportunity to make a choice for which text to present based on different features of the text. The text set and prompt (Musical Instruments) is from Dade County. The additional text set and prompt are ones that I wrote to be paired with this piece. Either piece is appropriate for student use. They are both written in the text based writing style that aligns with the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) and other assessments such as PARRC, AIR, etc. The intent was to use one text set and prompt for student use and the other for the teacher to use as a model. This way the teacher can model te

Experience

Currently, I am the media specialist at an elementary school. I have worked as a Writing Resource Specialist at an elementary school in the Hillsborough County Public School system for over twelve years. Additionally, I have taught second, fourth, and fifth grades and worked as an Intermediate Reading Resource Specialist. This is my twenty-second year of teaching.

Teaching style

I love the subtleties of how students receive knowledge. When I create lessons my thinking always goes to trying to figure out how to challenge the over achievers and how to motivate the reluctant learners. As a person who struggled in school, I feel that I am uniquely attuned to the needs of the kids who are not necessarily easy to engage. I love gathering relevant and meaningful resources and writing power point lessons designed to make kids have that light bulb moment.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Often times kids feel like no one listens to them but through the world of books, engaging texts, and the subject of writing students now have a voice and a powerful way to be heard.
