Do your students have difficulty giving credit where credit is due? When they do try to cite their sources, does it sound contrived? This power point has several examples of how the authors of some Time For Kids articles cite their sources. With the push for students to write in argumentative mode and use text evidence, this is a critical skill to teach even in the elementary grades.

This power point is a whopper! There are 57 slides and 4 mentor texts (3 from the CCSS Exemplars). The sequential set of lessons spans 5 days. Each day goes through the entire Writer’s Workshop model of mini lesson, mentor text, modeled writing with scripted “Think Alouds”, independent writing time, and a sharing session with CCSS Standards as questioning and thinking stems. This lesson uses a mnemonic device based on the letters OSCAR to help students develop a plan/outline/skeleton/draft for writing a character elaboration.
