Citing Sources

Do your students have difficulty giving credit where credit is due? When they do try to cite their sources, does it sound contrived? This power point has several examples of how the authors of some Time For Kids articles cite their sources. With the push for students to write in argumentative mode and use text evidence, this is a critical skill to teach even in the elementary grades.

This lesson uses a mnemonic device based on the letters OSCAR to help students develop a plan/outline/skeleton/draft for writing a character elaboration. Students are guided through the process with help from Oscar the Grouch, Sponge Bob, and from THE LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY: THE STORM by Cynthia Rylant (a selection from the CCSS 2-3 Band of Exemplar Text). Experience

Teaching style

I love the subtleties of how students receive knowledge. When I create lessons my thinking always goes to trying to figure out how to challenge the over achievers and how to motivate the reluctant learners. As a person who struggled in school, I feel that I am uniquely attuned to the needs of the kids who are not necessarily easy to engage. I love gathering relevant and meaningful resources and writing power point lessons designed to make kids have that light bulb moment.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Often times kids feel like no one listens to them but through the world of books, engaging texts, and the subject of writing students now have a voice and a powerful way to be heard.
