Giant Hand Giant Snack - Proportions Project

This project has the students make a giant hand and a giant snack to see what a giant that was the same proportions as they are would eat. I did this project with my geometry students (mostly freshman and sophomores) but you could probably also do it with 7th and 8th grade and/or Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1.

Missouri Learning Standards - Geometry - Word Doc - Table - 2016

I took the Missouri Learning Standards Geometry document that was adopted April 19, 2016 from the DESE website (pdf form and all of 6-12 math together) and typed it into a table in a word document so that I can use it easily for lesson planning and to cut and paste into other documents. Save yourself the time and use mine.

About the store

Experience

I have taught mathematics for 15 years. I started out teaching 6th-8th grade, then moved to High School and started with Integrated Math I, II, III and Algebra I. Currently the last 8 years have had me teaching Algebra I, II, Geometry, Integrated Math, College Algebra and Statistics.

Teaching style

I love to teach using foldables, interactive notebooks, hands-on activities, projects as well as some traditional teaching ideas. I love to use VARIETY to help my kids stay interested and cut down on boredom. My goals through teaching are to create relationships through mutual respect and help students learn to appreciate mathematics and to understand it versus just being able to follow a process or procedure that has been memorized without understanding. I feel that projects and real-world problems allow for the greatest understanding and learning.

My own education history

I have attended both Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO and Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. I graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics and have taken over 30 graduate hours and am currently trying to finish my MS degree at MSU.

Additional biographical information

I am a single mom with two beautiful children. I am one of those Math Nerds that loves curriculum. I love to design new activities and units. For a long time I have shared many of these items in workshops and at conferences. I am hoping now to be able to use this love of math and curriculum to help my family financially.
