This presentation covers the types of forces that act on materials and technologies. This is great material to precede any DESIGN type of activity or unit to clarify the stresses that may act upon student projects. It is especially good for bridge and structural design units.
The ZIP file includes both PDF and PPT files of the presentation as well as a note sheet and worksheet in PDF. The preview file contains a couple example PowerPoint slides as well as the guided note sheet and worksheet tha
Students stretch their problem solving skills by trying to design the tallest structure that can hold a golf ball using a predefined set of materials. In this quick (one class period or 50 minute) activity, students will brainstorm uses for each material, develop thumbnail sketches of design theories, build, test, and reflect on the success of their structural design.
