I have been teaching for 32 years; 3 years with children with behavior disorders, 2 years in second grade, 12 years in fifth grade and the past 15 as a math coordinator/coach/specialist.
We use a place value chart with place value disks to solve addition and subtraction. This structure gives you a chance to have both strategies on the same page. There are empty structures for you to copy for your class, with a sample of an addition problem and a subtraction problem.
This 2 page resource has the strategies the are introduced in Module 4 (except the Totals Below) for addition and subtraction. Over the years we have improved this and print it 2 on a page and create a table resource for the students to use.
This game has students working with even and odd 1 and 2 digit numbers. They pick a card, and move the number that fits what the direction says - "move to the next odd number". The game board comes in color as well in black and white for a printer friendly option. There are different level of questions on the cards, from just moving the the next even/odd number, to finding the largest or smallest even/odd number and finding and even/odd number with a specific digit in the tens or ones place. P
