These are chapter comprehension questions for chapters 1-22. I did drama and dialogue reading for the rest of the chapters! Enjoy.

Students read books throughout the year, each month I have them report on what they have read so far in a creative way. They can choose based on their book, however I do not let them do the same thing twice. This includes the rubric as to how I mark them as well. This exercise keeps them accountable to continue reading.

Before I start literature circles I create a menu for all of the books that the students are able to read. I have them sit at tables and look over the menus of the books and then have them list them from 1- ? 1 being the book they want to read the most. The students hand them in to me and from there as well as knowing their reading level, I choose their literature circle groups. Early Settlers and Europeans unit in grade 5 discusses the Haudenosaunee and how they developed into the Iroquois. These questions are related the Youtube video clip Haudenosaunee or Iroquois. Very informative and easy to understand.

After learning all about the parts of a newspaper and how to create great meaningful articles, I put the students in groups. I assign an editor to each group and together they create a newspaper. The final product I have them do on Publisher as they can set their paper to tabloid size to act as an actual newspaper.

This activity is another way of learning how to inference using quotations. Each picture has its own meaning depending on who is reading it. Have the students read each quote and then using the APE format, inference it.

Since spelling books no longer exist, I have gathered some exercises that used to be in each lesson of the Canadian Speller book. You can use these for any unit or your own word study program in the classroom.

For your students who need a little less but still want to participate in the fun activities as the rest of the class. This is an assignment with less writing, more showing, by using PowerPoint instead to showcase what they have learned.

Teaching students how to revise work properly is a great tool to help teach them how to correct their own work. Use this tool as a peer review or self review to help edit work.
