Teaching style

My teaching philosophy centers on building strong relationships with students as the foundation for learning. I prioritize hands-on, real-world experiences to engage learners and make content meaningful. I remain flexible and reflective in my practice, continuously adjusting my approach to meet the evolving needs of my students.

Awards & shining teacher moments

A recognized scholar and practitioner, Dr. Smith has authored peer-reviewed journal articles, presented at national and international conferences, and served as a grant reviewer for both state and federal programs. Her professional excellence has been acknowledged through awards such as the Emerging Professional Award from Auburn University at Montgomery. She remains actively involved in several professional organizations and continues to be a voice for innovation, equity, and excellence in education.

My own education history

I still remember my very first day of teaching—I was absolutely terrified. I had spent weeks decorating my classroom, labeling desks, organizing supplies, and prepping what little I thought I needed. I had the room looking great, but when the students walked in, I suddenly realized…I had no idea what to do! I thought, “Well, they’re just 2nd graders—they don’t know what they’re supposed to be doing either!” So I sat on the sofa, pulled out a book, and started reading. And you know what? That simple moment got us through the day. Looking back, I wish I had resources to guide me—not just for the first day, but for the first week, and honestly, the entire first year. That’s why I created this store: to help first-year teachers feel prepared, confident, and supported through every step of the journey. You’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself!

Additional biographical information

Previously, Dr. Smith was an Assistant Professor at Auburn University at Montgomery, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in educational psychology, child development, literacy, and instructional methods. It was in this role that she discovered a deep passion for mentoring novice teachers, finding great fulfillment in guiding pre-service educators as they developed their skills and confidence. She also built strong partnerships with local schools and actively contributed to academic service through faculty senate, accreditation committees, and professional societies. Dr. Smith’s classroom teaching experience spans early childhood through middle grades, with roles at Helena Intermediate School, Calera Middle School, and Montevallo Elementary School. In these positions, she served as an elementary teacher, mentor, technology coordinator, instructional leader, and coach—always focused on enhancing student achievement and supporting her colleagues.
