Tiny House 3-D Shape Volume and Surface Area

After a grueling unit on surface area and volume of 3-D shapes, a project is a great way to wind down and celebrate knowledge gained before the test. This build incorporates hands-on learning with accumulated knowledge of surface area and volume of 3-D shapes. Students choose how to build and what sshapes to include. I provide an approximately 12" by 12" cardboard base and scraps from my recycling bin (toilet paper rolls, cardboard boxes, cardstck, etc.). I supply tape as well.

This activity is fit for the first day of class. It is even approved by your typical middle schooler, the too cool for this and not wanting to be here at all but deep inside just want to be loved, type. Middle Schoolers buy into this because they will be able to talk about a song they hate with passion. What middle schooler doesn't have strong opinions on music? This activity involves a independent activity followed by an interactive activity. Get them moving on the first day!! Build commu

7th Grade Standard-Based Statistics Test

I have for you a 7th grade assessment broken down by Common Core Standards for Statistics. The meaning behind Standard-Based Assessments is that as a teacher you will be able to make observations about student learning by standard. You can then use this knowledge to guide further instruction. This is a great way to differentiate lessons or group work by student understanding.

Experience

I absolutely love teaching. This is my sixth year at the same elementary school, but I have previously taught middle school science, math, and social studies. I have been the science specialist at a local charter school and have also been an adjunct professor at Warren Wilson College. I hold a Masters degree in Science Education as well as a B.S. degree in Environmental Science. I am certified in middle grades math, science, social studies, and elementary education. Teaching style

I always believe in my heart that each class I have is truly the best. I strive to find new ways to reach them and have found that students in upper elementary and in middle grades strive when learning through movement. Plays and mini skits have worked wonders for my students to retain difficult science, social studies, and math concepts.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was honored to be the WLOS Thanks To Teachers Teacher of the Week in 2015. Go to WLOS.com and check me out.

My own education history

I worked my way through school at UNCA as an environmental science major. I then worked as an environmental chemist for over 7 years before becoming a teacher. I earned my MAT in Science Education from WCU. I have worked as a teacher since 2002.

Additional biographical information

I am married to a high school administrator and we adopted two wonderful active boys who are the loves of our life.
