About the store
I absolutely love teaching. This is my sixth year at the same elementary school, but I have previously taught middle school science, math, and social studies. I have been the science specialist at a local charter school and have also been an adjunct professor at Warren Wilson College. I hold a Masters degree in Science Education as well as a B.S. degree in Environmental Science. I am certified in middle grades math, science, social studies, and elementary education. I am currently working on my National Board Certification. I worked in the environmental regulatory field for over seven years before becoming a teacher.

Pythagorean Theorem Murder Mystery Project
There was a murder in the classroom. A class fish died and students must use the Pythagorean Theory to solve the mystery. This gives a chance for students to practice using this theory in a somewhat practical manner. Common Core 8.G.7 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

Tiny House 3-D Shape Volume and Surface Area
After a grueling unit on surface area and volume of 3-D shapes, a project is a great way to wind down and celebrate knowledge gained before the test. This build incorporates hands-on learning with accumulated knowledge of surface area and volume of 3-D shapes. Students choose how to build and what sshapes to include. I provide an approximately 12" by 12" cardboard base and scraps from my recycling bin (toilet paper rolls, cardboard boxes, cardstck, etc.). I supply tape as well.

Welcome to Middle School Classroom Activity
This activity is fit for the first day of class. It is even approved by your typical middle schooler, the too cool for this and not wanting to be here at all but deep inside just want to be loved, type. The Number System: Integer Homework
This two week homework assignment is not overwhelming for kids, and gives them an opportunity to practice away from the classroom. I give them a week to complete each of the worksheets. This gives them about 10 minutes of homework a night.

Teaching style
I always believe in my heart that each class I have is truly the best. I strive to find new ways to reach them and have found that students in upper elementary and in middle grades strive when learning through movement. Plays and mini skits have worked wonders for my students to retain difficult science, social studies, and math concepts.

My own education history
I worked my way through school at UNCA as an environmental science major. I then worked as an environmental chemist for over 7 years before becoming a teacher. I earned my MAT in Science Education from WCU. I have worked as a teacher since 2002.
