The Learning Pad

This is the a year long collection of reading comprehension lessons for use in a reader's workshop. The lessons use picture books as springboards to teach children to be thoughtful readers. These lessons were written for a first and second grade classroom, but can be used in K-3 classrooms. These reader's workshop mini lessons are creative and engaging and are well suited to those using a daily 5 model of instruction.

This is a year long writer's workshop curriculum designed for k-3. Most lessons begin with a mini lesson based on a mentor text. The lessons are creative and engaging and aim at developing passionate writers.

This is a collection of 7 reading strategy songs sung to common children's tunes. Songs include the following strategies: schema, connections, questioning, inferring, visualizing, and synthesizing. The songs can be used to reinforce teaching of the reading strategies. In my classroom we sing them during transitions to make instructional time of transition time.

Th reading strategies are paired with animals to help children remember the strategies that strong readers use to decode and comprehend text. For example, inferring is paired with a firefly because a reader lights up with ideas when they use clues in the text to infer. Sparky the firefly reminds us to infer and use clues in the text. Stretch the Snake reminds readers to stretch out new words. There are 23 posters included in this set.

This is a smartboard file of the reading strategy posters I created. Each reading strategy is represented by an animal that helps children remember the strategies that strong readers use to decode and understand text. This file is identical to the poster set, but in notebook format. Smart Notebook 11 software required.
