I taught for 10 years in the public school system, where I taught in a inner city school for 5 years and in a rural school for the other 5 years. Now that I stay home with my son, I have been teaching online for 2 years.
Students learn about how to collect data through the different types of samplings (systematic, stratified, simple random, etc.) and through a real world problem of finding what color car is the most prevalent in the school parking lot. Students work with a partner to complete this assignment.
Students work in groups to discover the different types of sampling (simple random sample, stratified, cluster, convenience, and systematic) through a real world type of problem.
This SMART lesson includes the following:
- A warm up with an AP multiple choice question
- Notes on different ways to collect data
- An activity on a census
- Notes for the Pink Meanie Investigative Task
- Examples of different types of sampling methods
- A closing the includes a card sort for the different types of sampling methods.
Students work with a partner to compile data from the internet, which they then create a scatterplot and answer questions on their data based on linear regression lines, correlation coefficients, coefficient of determination, etc. Students are to write their findings into a research paper.
Students are put into groups and given a question they need to answer through experimentation. Students create their own experiment, then are given the materials to do their experiment, and then make conclusions based on their findings through the creation of a poster.
Students bring in receipts from home and create data from them. They then answer questions about their data such as draw a scatterplot, find the correlation coefficient, find the coefficient of determination, find the least squares regression line, etc.
Students work through a current event and describes the different parts of the experiment (such as lurking variable, subjects, treatments, etc.). Then they are given the information for them to find their own experiment article and answer the same questions.
Students collect data and create different shapes of graphs (uniform, skewed left, skewed right, and symmetric).
